Norwegian authorities find safety violations in fatal rig accident

Oil rig COSLInnovator, which was hit by a huge wave in Norwegian waters in an accident that cost one employee's life, did not live up to safety regulations. In an accident report, the Norwegian petroleum safety authority points to two specific violations, report Norwegian media.

The safety regulations were violated, notes the Petroleum Safety Authority Norway (Petroleumstilsynet) in an accident report concerning rig Innovator which was hit by a huge wave on December 30th 2015, leading to the death of one employee and crushing 17 windows 20-25 meters above sea level.

The Chinese-owned rig should have been able to withstand the weather conditions, concludes the report. But the rig sat too low in the the water, notes the authority according to Norwegian dmedia, which points to two concrete instances in which the rig was in violation of safety regulations.
