Many vessels built in the last five years already meet the IMO's standard for energy efficiency in 2020, according to a new study. NGOs point to a need to rethink the index ahead of next week's meeting of the IMO's environmental protection committee.
That ships are supposedly no more energy efficient now, than in 1990 is simply an imaginative statement, according to the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) regarding the NGOs' report on ship efficiency.
A new report from Seas at Risk and Transport & Environment shows that the energy efficiency of vessels is less now than it was in 1990. "Important contribution to the IMO's debate on energy efficiency," says ship engineer and consultant Hans Otto Kristensen.
