Port of Rotterdam raises discount for green vessels

The Port of Rotterdam is looking to provide even greater discounts for green vessels, which can already save upwards of 10 percent on port tariffs. The carriers need a special "Green Award" for their vessels if they want the discount.

Port of Rotterdam will now try to push carriers even further toward using environmentally friendly vessels. The port has already introduced discounts in recent years for shipowners who have reduced their sulfur, nitrous oxide and CO2 emissions.

The savings shipowners have been able to get have corresponded to upwards of 10 percent of port tariffs. In 2016 alone, Port of Rotterdam awarded discounts totaling EUR 3 million for eco vessels.
