Approximately 150 sailings were cancelled on the transpacific and Asia-Europe routes from October last year to February this year. The cancellations have had an impact on freight rates and the level of service shippers have been able to expect, Drewry states based on different statistics, Hellenic Shipping News reports. Now, the analyst company predicts that carriers will probably continue to cancel trips to avoid withdrawing entire routes which has led to many discussions.
Cancelled departures result in a lot of problems, Drewry states. Shippers know their status when carriers withdraw routes whereas cancellation of departures may lead to unexpected space shortage and roll-overs. This means that the average capacity reduction of between two and seven percent coming from cancelled departures as measured by Drewry does not show the entire reality of the situation as the reduction has not been able to keep up rates despite the cancellations.
