The ICS is worried about Italy's unwillingness to accept migrants rescued at sea. It is important that EU member states handle the issue right away, says Secretary General Peter Hinchliffe.
Ports in the Mediterranean are attracting more deep-sea vessels than the ports in North Europe. One new trend in particular that emerged in 2015 has made the difference, according to a SeaIntel analysis.
Italy's new government this weekend refused port access to a ship carrying 629 migrants. And so has Malta. "When new political winds are blowing, as is the case in Italy now, we expect that a political solution will be found," says Director Maria Skipper Schwenn, Danish Shipping, to ShippingWatch.
Rescue operations in the Mediterranean still represent an enormous challenge for carriers. Ships have so far in 2017 been involved in 101 incidents related to refugees attempting to traverse the sea.
