Room for Danish Piracy Industry

A new security industry aimed at preventing and fighting pirate attacks on ships is growing up. The new market consists of everything from the deliverance of barbed wire, safety spaces and armed guards

As the threat from pirates in the Gulf of Aden and the eastern part of Africa continues to grow, a new niche sector of companies offering security for shipping companies’ crews and ships is growing up. The Danish Shipowners’ Association estimates that between 10 and 15 Danish companies are involved in the security sector ranging from educating crews to placing armed guards. Furthermore it is estimated that insofar a new player can provide a product of sufficient quality, the market is not yet saturated.

“Often, the shipping companies have chosen to go with the established guard companies primarily from Great Britain. But they are in high demand so if a highly qualified company should appear there is definitely a need to be covered”, says Morten Glamsø who is a piracy consultant at the Danish Shipowners’ Association.
