Minister: New environmental regulations to take effect in 2014

2014 marks a deadline for the new environmental regulations involving purification of ballast water, stresses the Danish minister for the environment, Ida Auken. Shipping companies respond with a request for more time.

The Danish minister for the environment, Ida Auken, maintains that the timeline for the regulations on purification of ballast water is set; regulations must enter into effect in 2014, as planned.

On Wednesday, vice president of the Danish Shipowners’ Association, Jan Fritz Hansen, indicated that shipping companies will now push for a respite of the fixed dates set in IMO’s ballast water convention, which is to ensure that all ships purify the water they discharge.
