EU to kickstart LNG investments

Shipping companies, ports, politicians and suppliers have circled around LNG projects for many years. Now, the EU is ready with a roadmap for – and money to – the start of this big project.

The European Commission now acknowledges the need to start acting on one of the big environmental projects within the maritime sector; to use LNG as fuel. That is why, the Commission plans to present a roadmap for this project in August. According to information gathered by ShippingWatch, part of the EU initiative includes better access to finance LNG projects.

“It has been a bit like the discussion of which came first, the hen or the egg. Shipping companies have meant the suppliers had to present a solution. Ports have been waiting for the shipping companies to act and ultimately, too little has happened. That is why we will present a roadmap for turning LNG into fuel and how to start installation of this”, the EU Commissioner of transport, Siim Kallas tells ShippingWatch.
