Norden: Asian coal market awaits major investments

The market for coal transport in the successful Asia region will increase when investments in the Australian and Indonesian mines, and in the Indian ports, fall into place, says Peter Borup, Group Senior Vice President and Head of Norden Shipping in Singapore.

SINGAPORE. The need for coal transport will increase significantly over the next years in the traffic of South East Asia and Australia, predicts Managing Director of Norden Shipping (Singapore), Peter Borup.

“Indonesia currently exports 230 million mt (mega ton) of coal. With the planned expansions, export will increase by 125 million mt of coal between 2013 and 2017. We find the same tendency in Australia, where coal capacity will be doubled over the next four years,” said Peter Borup at a press conference on Wednesday, held at Norden’s Singapore headquarters.
