
74 new giant container ships, called Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV) carrying more than 10,000 TEU, will be delivered from shipyards and deployed in the already crammed container fleet during 2012, primarily on the routes between Asia and Europe. This is the conclusion in the latest calculation from the market research company SeaIntel.
The large vessels will enter the market at a time in which demand growth in the Asia-Europe traffic is low and in a market which might have difficulties absorbing new capacity, SeaIntel writes, expecting that the market will begin to slowly erode later this year.
