European Shipowners: 2015 sulphur deadline not realistic

2015 is not a realistic deadline as to when ships in certain areas of European waters are allowed to emit a maximum of 0.1 percent sulphur, Secretary General of the European Community Shipowners Association, Alfons Guinier tells ShippingWatch.

The 2015 deadline as to when ships sailing in the North and Baltic Seas may no longer emit more than 0.1 percent sulphur is unrealistic. So the European Community Shipowners Association told ShippingWatch at the final conference of the North European LNG Infrastructure Project in Copenhagen on Thursday.

“Forget about 2015. It is simply not possible to alter fuel from one day to another. Bunkering facilities are not there, security regulation has not been developed and costs are still high”, Secretary General in the European Community Shipowners Association, Alfons Guinier , told ShippingWatch.
