New regulations on chartered tonnage could pressure shipping companies

New accounting regulations will probably state that chartered tonnage must be featured on the balance sheet in the same way as owned tonnage, perhaps already from 2013 and onward. The Danish Shipowners’ Association has long fought against the regulations and hopes they will include a triviality limit.

For both major companies such as Maersk and Norden, but perhaps even more so for the smaller companies, the new regulations under way could end up as a great administrative burden. The new regulations demand that chartered tonnage be entered on the balance sheet in the same way as owned tonnage.
