Arctic Ambassador: The work has to be sustainable

It is absolutely essential that the boom in activities expected at the Arctic does not in any way harm the climate or the indigenous peoples of the region, Denmark’s new Arctic ambassador tells ShippingWatch.

The potentially impending Arctic adventure may not in any way end up harming the Arctic environment or the indigenous people of the region, Denmark’s new Arctic ambassador, Klavs A. Holm, tells ShippingWatch.

“We are very aware that an oil spill in this region could have severe consequences. Greenland and the private parties up there know this as well. Deepwater Horizon has lefts its marks, and one of them is the environmental emergency apparatus now required from the governments. In this sense, it’s impossible to compare the Arctic regions with the Mexican Gulf, as it’s much more difficult to fight an oil spill in the Arctic,” says Klavs A. Holm.
