Eritrea-Yemen conflict makes it harder to recognize pirates

The dispute between Eritrea and Yemen further complicates matters for international merchant ships when they sail through the Red Sea, estimates chief analyst at Risk Intelligence, Nis Mathiesen.

The flare-up between Yemini fishers and Eritrean authorities makes it more difficult for international merchant ships to distinguish pirates from the rest of individuals the sailing the Red Sea.

“We have previously noticed that there was a great deal of reporting of suspicious conduct, which then turns out to be false alarms. There have been many different reasons, and this is another piece of information which helps to explain the faulty reports,” says Nis Mathiesen, chief analyst at Risk Intelligent, to ShippingWatch.
