Danish Ship Register full of special rules for foreign shipowners

Requiring Danish board members in foreign shipping companies in Denmark, and very high costs compared to foreign flag registers, are two of the obstacles that need to be removed if Denmark wants to successfully attract foreign companies, says shipowners and the government’s growth team.

Even though new rules in the spring have made it easier for companies to change from foreign registers to the Danish register, there are still obstacles that need to be removed if the ambitions of attracting foreign businesses and shipping companies to Denmark are to succeed, according to the government’s growth team as well as the Danish Shipowners’ Association.

According to the recommendations from the growth team, the rules for ship registry need to be modernized and simplified, e.g. in relation to the special requirements for nationalities on the boards of Danish companies, as wells as looking into the possibilities of allowing non-EU companies to sail ships under Danish flag on the same terms enjoyed by EU countries.
