
Though it has not yet lead to massive job losses for Danish ship officers, the Danish Maritime Officers union fears that the possibility of employing non-EU citizens on the bridge could be the first step in an out-phasing of Danish ship officers.
“Out-phasing might be the right term, because we’re concerned that the number of maritime officers will, over time, fall below the critical mass. So far, our members and their work are still in high demand. But just because it’s like that right now, it doesn’t mean things will stay like that,” says Fritz Ganzhorn, Head of the Danish Maritime Officers.
