The freight rates on Asia-Europe, of particular importance to A.P. Moeller – Maersk, have increased markedly during the last two weeks. Thereby, the companies seem to have succeeded in their great rate increase of $500, which was announced on November 1st. It is a positive sign that the industry’s price discipline is back. However, November’s success story is no guarantee that the price war will not break out again, and the analysts are divided on the subject of which way the rates will go.
This week, spot rates on Asia-Europe increased with 13.4 percent to $1491 and thereby, the rates have increased with $417 during the last two weeks. That means 80 percent of the announced rate increases have been carried through.
