EU countries tone down sanctions in new scrapping regulation

Denmark supports new strict rules for scrapping of ships and that the rules must apply immediately. The latter proposal is not widely supported in the EU while the shipping companies have some reservations.

It is not likely that the European Commission will be able to push through strict sanctions on shipping companies when new European regulation on scrapping of shipping is adopted.  However, a large majority of countries is expected to support the Commission proposal that EU countries will adopt regulation for scrapping and not wait for the IMO.

Issuing of large fines to shipping companies, which have sold a ship to a new owner who subsequently, and within six months, resells the ship for scrapping in facilities not living up to the EU demands, was one of the consequences of the initial Commission plans.
