Corporate social responsibility – CSR – is not a fancy term the shipping businesses should just add to their business understanding. No, CSR is a key part of the business understanding. As such, CSR challenges are not isolated challenges found in a small corner of the business, but rather necessary challenges for the business operations of the shipping industry as a whole, says Jacob A. Sterling, Head of Environment & CSR at Maersk Line.
“The challenges are business challenges. We’re facing five big ones right now, which are not just about social responsibility; rather, they are about being a part of society. You could say that, for us, the financial and the social interests are starting to merge now,” says Jacob A. Sterling to ShippingWatch, in relation to the Danish Shipowners’ Association’s “Global CSR Dilemmas in Shipping” event on Wednesday.
