Alphaliner: Container market imbalance will not end before 2014

Even though Alphaliner has lowered its initial estimates for the container fleet growth in 2012 and 2013, a new analysis shows that it could still be years before the growth in demand exceeds the supply of ships.

The sum picture of this year is aided by cancellations and postponed orders, and also that more – and younger – container ships are being scrapped. But it is still not enough to change the fact that there will be too many ships on the market for too few customers, both this year and next year. Not before 2014, maybe even the latter part of that year, will the growth in demand be able to justify all the new ships, writes Alphaliner in its latest review of the global fleet of container ships.
