Shipping doctors with offshore specialty are in demand

Major activity in the offshore sector is now prompting the doctors of The Danish Shipowners’ Association to expand their specialty from mariners to oil workers.

Ship’s mates’ eyesight and heart troubles are no longer the only concerns for the five doctors of The Danish Shipowners’ Association in Copenhagen, who are hired to treat employees within the Danish shipping industry. Increasingly, the patients are now also employees of the offshore industry.

“With the increasing offshore activity, a significant share of the people we treat are now from the offshore industry. They count both employees of the Norwegian, Danish, and English sector of the North Sea, but also worldwide offshore activities such as Australia, the Mexican Gulf, and Qatar. We have definitely experienced a change in that there is a higher level of activity than previously in the offshore industry,” says Dr. Mette Gabriel, Head of Medical Office of The Danish Shipowners’ Association.
