Environmental spokesman: EU scrapping fund will be flag neutral

The Swedish spokesman for the Environmental Committee, Carl Schlyter, puts a lid on the concerns that the proposed establishment of a European scrapping fund will lead to outflagging of European ships. He tells ShippingWatch that the fund will be flag neutral.

Money is the basic reason that shipowners these days are chosing to have their ships scrapped in countries such as India and Pakistan, under poor environmental- and working conditions, explains Swedish member of the EU Parliament for the green group, Carl Schlyter, spokesman for the Parliament's Environmental Committee.

The Environmental Committee in Brussels will vote next month on his suggestion for the EU Commission's proposal on safer ship scrapping.
