Record high container ship demolition in January

The first 2013 container ship demolition figures bode well for the entire year, Bimco assesses. The volume scrapped in January 2013 is only surpassed by two other months.

If the extend of demolition is an indicator of the way in which the container carriers will cope this year, the first positive signs are already visible. January 2013 was the month with the third-largest volume of scrapped tonnage in history.

“Good news can be found on the demolition front, where January saw the third highest amount of container tonnage being sold for recycling. The strong number is third only to the two peak months in mid-2009. This bodes well for the industry and BIMCO remains upbeat on the likelihood for another strong year in recycling on top of an extraordinary 2012,” Bimco states in an analysis of the 2013 container industry.
