This week, Grontmij presents its design of a new marine propulsion system specialized in ice class offshore supply ships. The company expects the new system to increase sales – both to offshore ships and ships that wish to curb fuel consumption.
“The system is great for supply ships operating in Arctic areas, because it is targeted at icy waters in which you risk the normal thrusters (thruster propellers) breaking. We also have extra fins in the system that contribute to the energy savings – so far our calculations say 6 percent. The fins provide a greater lift which provides an advantage and an opportunity for increased cargo capacity,” says Leif Jacobsen, department director of Grontmij Inc. to ShippingWatch.
