Scorpio out shopping again, now for 30th product tanker

Recently, few weeks have gone by without an announcement from Scorpio that the company is making new acquisitions to its fleet of product tankers. Now Scorpio has made yet another acquisition and the company has orders for 30 tankers in total.

Scorpio Tankers has placed an order with Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. for two LR2 product tankers of 114,000 dwt priced at USD 49.75 million each. The ships will be delivered in the third quarter of 2014 and are described by Scorpio as a continuation of the company’s existing newbuildings program to build a fleet of eco-design ships. At the same time, the company has also entered into option agreements on the construction of two LR2 ships.

The company already has 28 new product tanker ships in total on the way from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard Co., Ltd., SPP Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. in South Korea: 20 MRs, six handymax ice-class 1A ships and two LR2 ships. Two newbuildings are expected for delivery in April 2013 and the remaining 26 in 2014.
