2013: A new spine-chilling year for the container industry

The prospect of stable earnings within the container industry still seems far off for the much-tried shipowners. Only seven out of 21 companies were able to produce positive operational results last year. 2013 looks bleak, estimates Alphaliner.

239 million USD. This is the extent of the operational losses incurred by the container companies. The data is provided by Alphaliner which has examined the accounts of the 21 companies from Top30 who published their financial reports for 2012. The prospect of profitability and stability within the container industry still seems far off for the much-tried shipowners. Only seven out of 21 companies were able to produce positive operating results last year.

2012 got off to a catastrophic start for the shipowners, but they managed to reverse the trend in the second and third quarter for a short period of time on the strength of major and general rate increases in the first half of the year, but the level did not stay the same throughout the year due to a seasonally weak fourth quarter.
