
The container carriers’ economic results in the last five years do not make for cheerful reading if you put all the years together. According to the British analyst firm Drewry, the major shipping lines have accumulated a deficit of 700 million USD in the period of 2008 to 2012.
The companies have seen years with surpluses such as last year, during which the accumulated surplus was 280 million USD. But as Drewry notes, it is a very poor result when considering the total business volume which consisted of transporting no less than 170 million containers from A to B. If you look at 2011 alone, the total deficit for the industry was 7.7 billion USD.
