Mergers and acquisitions among major container carriers have created the greatest market concentration ever, as the 10 largest container carriers control 77 percent of the market in the last month of 2017.

According to Alphaliner, the level will further rise in 2018 to 82 percent, when China's Cosco takes over Hong Kong-based OOCL (Orient Overseas Container Lines), and when the merger of container activities in Japan's three largest carrier groups, ONE (Ocean Network Express) is finalized from April 1 next year.
