China could reject up to five million containers of waste material

A new waste policy in China could mean that in the near future the country might reject up to five million containers of waste material. This could impact those carriers which have traditionally sailed waste to China, reports Drewry.

China has caught the world's waste carriers off guard by tightening the rules around importing recyclable waste.

The transport of waste to China often represents a significant part of the backhaul trade, particularly on the important Asia - North Europe routes, and China's decision could therefore create problems for carriers transporting waste.
