The window for buying feeder ships could close soon

The current window for buying feeder tonnage could close in the near future, the CEO of major feeder tonnage buyer MPC Container Ships tells ShippingWatch. The German shipowner has in 14 months built a fleet of 68 vessels, while asset prices have increased significantly in the same period.

The market for buying and selling feeder tonnage has been very active in the last year and a half, a period in which many smaller container ships have changed hands.

Several sales have been triggered by strained sellers and banks looking to scale back their exposure to shipping. On the other side, there have been buyers eying good opportunities to buy ships at a discount and to increase their market exposure ahead of a de-facto recovery.
