Hacker attack against Cosco spreads through the Americas

Tuesday's hacker attack on Cosco Shipping's US offices has spread throughout the container carrier's activities in the Americas, the company writes in an update. Affected countries include Canada, Panama and Brazil.

Cosco Shipping's North and South American activities have been struck by a hacker attack that has spread from the container carrier's US offices.

The Chinese carrier was hit by a cyber attack Tuesday, disrupting operations. According to Journal of Commerce (JOC), Cosco's US division was unable to maintain normal communication with its ships, clients, freight forwarders and ports. Lloyd's List reported further that the cyber offensive took the form of a ransomware attack, whereby hackers demand a ransom for information or in return for unlocked affected systems.
