Major carriers have improved punctuality

Although close to half of all ships are still delayed, things are moving in the right direction regarding the schedule reliability of leading container liners.

Major container carriers have gotten better at calling at port on time as pandemic-related congestion has started to ease.

On a monthly basis, analyst firm Sea-Intelligence monitors whether carriers are keeping their schedules.

Moreover, the latest version of the ranking shows that carriers’ schedule reliability is improving.

Overall, 52 percent of container ships are able to arrive on time, an improvement of 6.6 percentage points compared to the previous month, confirming the gradual process.

Maersk is still leading the pack with a schedule reliability of 56.4 percent, followed by French CMA CGM and Swiss-Italian MSC.

Taiwanese Wan Hai is at the bottom with 41 percent. However, it’s worth noting that Wan Hai only had a reliability of 14.2 percent in the corresponding month the year before.

Schedule reliability has been a sore point for the container industry, and even though improvement can be detected, companies still have to deal with delays almost half of the time.

Average delay was at 5.5 days in October 2022.
