Container carriers close to settling EU cartel inquiry

Carriers and the EU Commission seem to be nearing an agreement on how container carriers going forward will announce their general rate increases. The deal will be the result of a protracted cartel inquiry by the Brussels-based Commission.

Container carriers such as Maersk Line, MSC and and 13 other carriers seem to be nearing an agreement with the EU Commission concerning a practice the carriers has relied on for years when announced general rate increases (GRI) on select routes - a practice which, according to the EU Commission, could be in violation of competition rules due to the fact that all the players in the container industry can follow each other, thus resulting in uniform rate increases.
