Alphaliner: Eight carriers to form new major alliance

A new alliance among eight container carriers will see the light of day in the near future according to Alphaliner. A German carrier is allegedly in play as a potential ninth member.

A new major alliance consisting of eight carriers in total, including Germany's Hapag-Lloyd as well as several Asian carriers, is expected to be announced later this month, writes analyst firm Alphaliner in its weekly newsletter.

The eight container carriers, with Hamburg Süd as a potential ninth member, will serve as a serious competitor to Maersk Line and MSC's 2M alliance and the new Ocean Alliance on the key east-west tradelanes between Asia and Europe.
