Shipowners still struggling with US ballast water regulations

The US Coast Guard discovered almost twice as many violations of ballast water rules in 2018 as the year before. Inadequate training of crew is part of the explanation.

It continues to be difficult for carriers to uphold the rules for ballast water in US waters.

Since the beginning of 2016, the US has demanded that both old and new vessels are beginning to install systems to rinse ballast water. However, several shipowners have complained that the rules are hard to understand and perhaps also have difficulty in upholding them.

The US coast guard, which handles for enforcement, writes in its annual report that the number of violations close to doubled in 2017.
