China prepared to go further than IMO in terms of environmental regulations

China could very well be next in line to introduce a ban against open-loop scrubbers. The country's increasing environmental focus could lead to even tougher rules than the IMO's sulfur regulations, says bank.

China could become the next player to ban the use of open-loop scrubbers, as Singapore recently decided to do in the port's area starting in 2020.

According to ShippingWatch's sources, there is no official ban on open-loop scrubbers scrubbers in China, but there is a plan to introduce one. Not just for the inland rivers, as several news outlets have reported, but some of the lager waterways could also be included, sources say.
