Shipping lawyer to carriers: Now is the time to use your force majeure clauses

The corona crisis is unfamiliar to one of the shipping community's most experienced lawyers, who reports that legal services are in high demand. He urges shipping companies to act quickly if they want to use their force majeure clauses.

If carriers and shipping companies plan to use their force majeure clauses, they should not wait a month to do so. They should do it now, advises Peter Appel, chairman and head of law firm Gorrissen Federspiel's shipping department.

"If you want to declare force majeure, it has to happen quickly," says Appel in an interview with ShippingWatch.
