Not all pirate attacks in the Gulf of Guinea and off the coast of Nigeria reach the authorities or the media, as both the shipping companies and the oil industry operating in the area sometimes fail to notify the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), which handles the public stats on piracy attacks.
According to international analysts, the lack of reporting is caused by, among other things, the fact that shipping companies fear expensive delays if a ship, following an attack or attempted hijacking, has to undergo inspection at the nearest port, while rising insurance premiums and concerned customers also play a part, according to an upcoming article in the Danish Maritime Officers' magazine.
