It will be entirely up to the IMO to pass regulations aimed to make international shipping contribute to the global climate deal, approved by countries around the world during the most recent climate summit, COP-21 in Paris last December.
European shipowners could exhale sighs of relief after holding their breath since the news went public that neither aviation or shipping would be included in the climate, giving rise to anxiety concerning a political proposal from Brussels, which would hit carriers hardest in Europe. Now, the EU Commission has officially passed the baton to the IMO leaving the sensitive subject up to the UN's International Maritime Organization, and not least the upcoming meeting this fall in the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), where the matter will be discussed for the first time.
