Carriers now showing interest in cyber insurances

Carriers have realized that they need to insure themselves against loss of earnings in the event of hacker attacks. Insurance companies report growing interest after the cyber attack against companies including Maersk in June.

The cyber attack against Maersk, which may have cost the Danish group upwards of USD 289 million, has pushed the cyber security issue to the top of the agenda in then shipping sector.

Carriers have in particular become aware of how they can safeguard themselves against loss of income related to an attack that could crash booking systems and could force vessels to be idle.
