IMO to discuss limits on engine power

Instead of implementing speed limits on shipping to cut down carbon emissions, individual ships' engine power can be limited, Bimco says in one proposal to be assessed by the IMO.

Instead of implementing more slow steaming or speed limits in shipping, limitations should be imposed on the amount of engine power each ship is allowed to draw upon to propel the vessel.

According to ShippingWatch's information, this is one of the proposals that the IMO will assess within the near future as one of several suggestions for how shipping may lower its CO2 emissions in the short term, that is toward 2030.
