FMC to investigate discrimination against hazardous chemical products

Distributors of hazardous chemical products have informed the Federal Maritime Commission that container ships are reducing their loads or avoiding shipping them to the US entirely.

The Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) will investigate whether container ship operators are participating in systematic discrimination against hazardous chemical products when they sail from Europe or Asia to the US.

FMC Commissioner Carl W. Bentzel has asked that ongoing investigations into container ship operations, the Vessel-Operating Common Carrier Audit Program, be expanded to see if there is any basis to the chemical distributors' claims.
