
China's shipbuilding industry will be left with around 30 shipyards by the end of 2015, and even that may be a conservative assessment. That's the sentiment from the CEO for Yangzijiang Shipbuilding, Ren Yuanlin, who in local media Seatrade Maritime both outlined his vision for current developments in the Chinese shipyard industry and offered projections for the future.
The Chinese shipbuilding sector included over 3000 companies back in 2010, but the severe overcapacity has closed thousands of them as newbuilding orders have plummeted. According to Ren Yuanlin, the 30 remaining shipyards make up a total capacity of 60 million dwt.
