German bunker company: Sulfur regulations will spark consolidation

Before 2020 and the impending global sulfur requirements, smaller players will be absorbed by the larger ones, predicts German bunker player Bomin.

The global bunker industry will see more consolidation over the coming two years, predicts German bunker supplier Bomin, after Head of Global Credit, Paul Millar, discussed the impact of the global sulfur regulations at a conference earlier this week.

The new sulfur regulations, which hold that vessels may not sail with fuel containing more than 0.5 percent sulfur unless there is a scrubber installed on board, will mean higher costs and therefore more pressure on the credit situation for both bunker and shipping companies, says Millar according to Platts.
