The container market won't normalize materially until far into 2022, says FMC chair

Even if demand for container transport normalizes to some extent over the course of 2022, it will take months before carriers are able to say the same, FMC Chair Daniel B. Maffei tells ShippingWatch.

A little more than a year after the Covid-19 pandemic triggered an unprecedented development in the container market, the demand for goods from Asia has only continued to rise, while inventories of many businesses across the US and Europe stand empty just as they have for months on end.

The latest data from the US west coast confirms that the need for transport and orders for vessels to call on the Port of Long Beach or Los Angeles have far from abated. On the contrary, the surge has escalated to the same heights as in the beginning of the year when 30-35 larger vessels were anchored there, waiting for space to open up at the ports.
