Evergreen: Capacity expansion outpaces cargo growth

An oversupply of tonnage is the biggest issue for the container industry this year and the next, says Taiwanese Evergreen in an interview with ShippingWatch. Evergreen contributes to the challenge with its own range of container ship orders, also in the largest segment.

Asked to name one specific challenge in the future, Evergreen points to the growing overcapacity in the industry, the Taiwan-based container carrier tells ShippingWatch in an interview.

Talk of too many vessels is far from new among ship owners, but the pace of orders for newbuildings has been rapidly increasing in just the past six months. A new analysis from Alphaliner shows that the orderbook on container ships in 2015 stands at a total of 1,04 million teu - a 60 percent increase compared to the same period in 2014.
