
A new European border and coast guard, for the purpose of protecting the EU's outer borders, looks set to become a reality in the near future. The coast guard's tasks will include curbing the massive flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean and entering countries such as Greece and Italy.
The EU Commission has presented its proposal, which includes an expert team of up to 1,500 people who can be deployed within three days.
