New European coast guard in the making

The EU Commission has presented its proposal for a new unit to assist member nations in handling the large influx of migrants, not least in the Mediterranean.

A new European border and coast guard, for the purpose of protecting the EU's outer borders, looks set to become a reality in the near future. The coast guard's tasks will include curbing the massive flow of migrants crossing the Mediterranean and entering countries such as Greece and Italy.
