Nigerian rebel group aims to stop oil attacks

Rebel group MEND encourages another armed group, Niger Delta Avengers, to put its weapons down and participate in peace talks with the government. Attacks on oil facilities do not solve the problems with corruption and pollution, says a spokesperson.

Stop the attacks on the oil industry and give peace talks a chance, says The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) in a statement urging another armed group, Niger Delta Avengers, to stop its violent missions.

The plea arrives after a long period of attacks on the country's oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta, which have contributed in lifting the oil price above USD 50 per barrel.
