
Two crew members on board chemical tanker vessel "Bow Lind" from Norwegian carrier Odfjell have been awarded almost half a million dollars in the US for acting as whisteblowers by notifying the US Coast Guard that the ship had violated the law by emptying its water tanks into the ocean after cleaning the ship's engine room, according to Norwegian newspapers Dagens Næringsliv and Dagbladet.
The subsequent investigation of the event resulted in Odfjell being sentenced this March to pay a fine of USD 900,000, while the court also ordered the carrier to pay USD 300,000 to en environmental fund.
