Major French oil and gas company Total Energies is being investigated for potential ’greenwashing’ by the prosecution of Nanterre, report several media including Franceinfo.

The first of their kind in France, investigations were already launched in December 2021, writes the media.

The case is based on complaints from NGOs Wild Legal, Sea Shepherd France and Darwin Climax Coalitions, which in filed complaints October 2020 alleging that TotalEnergies is directly responsible of significant air pollution, disinformation and ”misleading commercial practices.”

In April, the NGO trio filed another complaint against the French supermajor for practices of so-called ”ecocide.” This complaint, however, has not yet amounted to any investigations or expanded those already taking place, the French prosecution has stated.

According to French media BFM, TotalEnergies has not responded to any media requests regarding the case.
